Ok....some of you might be wondering "Why is Hockey Night on Long Island Alex writing an article about MLS Soccer?" Well, as of late I have had a growing interest in the sport the world calls football and us Americans call soccer. Well, last night I had the privilege of attending my first professional soccer match at the Meadowlands between the New York Red Bulls and the Kansas City Wizards. Since this obviously wouldn't fit in on the HNLI blog, I figured KSN was a good place to share my Red Bull experience.
The Game:
Both the Red Bulls and Wizards are off to great starts this season. Going into the game last night, the Red Bulls and Wizards both sat atop the MLS Eastern Conference. So, as you can imagine, this was bound to be a competitive game. So it came as a surprise when the Red Bulls got out to a quick 2-0 lead. Juan Pablo Angel, who recently came to the MLS from Aston Villa in the Premiership, opened the scoring in the 6th minute on a beautiful goal via the header with an assist from Dave van den Bergh of Holland. The fans at Giants Stadium were pumped. It got even better when Clint Mathis kicked the ball passed the KC keeper in the 15th minute. After some specatcular saves by Red Bulls goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus, the Red Bulls lead seemed insurmountable.
This game, however, was nowhere near out of reach. Just when it seemed like New York would be able to end the half with a 2 goal lead, Kerry Zavagnin lobbed a shot over Waterreus and into the back of the goal. This brought the first half to a close with the score 2-1 in favor of New York.
When the second half began, the Wizards looked fired up and ready to fight, while the Red Bulls seemed indifferent. While it took a bit more than 15 minutes, the Red Bulls finally surrendered the equalizer to Yura Movsisyan in the 70th minute. Just nine minutes later, Movsisyan notched another one for Kansas City and sent the fans at Giants Stadium into a deathly silence. As Kansas City had proved earlier, however, "It ain't over 'til it's over."
The Red Bulls desperately attempted to knot the game up at 3. However, as the game entered the 90th mintue, it seemed that all of their efforts would fall short. However, when the Red Bulls sent a cross into the box, Jose Burciaga, Jr was called for a penalty after colliding with John Wolyniec .
So, the game came down to a penalty kick. It was Red Bulls Striker Juan Pablo Angel up against KC keeper Kevin Hartman. Angel was poised to tie it up and sent a laser beam to the top right corner of the goal. The Red Bulls supporters erupted as the Red Bulls managed to salvage a draw and one point in the standings.
Despite the dramatics, I'm sure the Bulls know that they should have had a victory after acquiring an early 2 goal lead. After allowing 3 goals, however, a tie seemed more like a relief than anything else.

The Red Bull Experience
As I mentioned earlier, this was my first time attending an MLS game. The scene, however, was very similar to what I expected. I showed up about an hour before game time to buy tickets and hang around the stadium. While there were a few tailgaters kicking a ball around the parking lot, the place was virtually deserted.
In the stadium, however, it did fill up a bit. It seemed as though they only sell the lower level, and yet that still was still only about 2/3 full. However, there were many passionate fans there. The biggest group of Red Bull loyalists could be heard banging a drum throughout all 90 minutes of action. In addition, there were face painters and flag wavers and horn wearers out to cheer on the Red Bulls. There were also a bunch of people throughout the stadium in different soccer jerseys and myself in my England national team jersey.
While the MLS doesn't get very much attention, the experience of my first Red Bulls game will surely be a memorable one. If you ever have a free Saturday night, you might wanna check the Red Bulls schedule and head down to Giants Stadium. Because in all actuality, the Red Bulls might be the best New York team out there. First place...not too shabby.
